TUFS Cinema: Screening of the South Asian Film ‘Sholay’

June 19, 2025

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, TUFS Cinema hosted a screening event for the South Asian Film ‘Sholay’ at Prometheus Hall within AGORA Global.

TUFS Cinema's South Asian film screenings began in 2015 and this year marks the 10th anniversary of the series. The event attracted significant interest from film enthusiasts, with nearly all seats reserved a week in advance, and over 300 attendees on the day of the screening.

The film ‘Sholay (Flame)’ screened this time is a 50-year-old film that is considered a pioneer of “Bollywood cinema,” first released in 1975. Thanks to the cooperation of JAIHO, we were able to screen it in a digitally remastered version. The vivid imagery and powerful story continue to captivate audiences even after 50 years, making it a fitting work to commemorate the 10th anniversary of TUFS Cinema's South Asian film screenings.

Following the screening, a commentary was provided by Ms. Tamaki Matsuoka, an expert on South Asian cinema. Using materials and slides distributed to participants, she discussed the film's significance within Indian cinema, its importance, and the profound influence it has had on other works beyond language barriers. Particularly, her explanation that “memorizing the dialogue from this film can be useful for communication in India” resonated with participants who have knowledge of India.
